Bao'an is situated in the core area of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, bordering Hong Kong, Macao, and Guangzhou. It lies at the center of the Pearl River Delta development corridor, serving as a crucial node on the Maritime Silk Road, endowed with a unique geographical location and distinct regional advantages.
With a history dating back to the establishment of Bao'an County in AD 331 (6th year of Emperor Xianhe's reign, Eastern Jin Dynasty), Bao'an boasts nearly 1,700 years of history. It is one of the key cultural cities in the Lingnan region and represents the cultural origin of Shenzhen and Hong Kong. Currently, Bao’an covers a land area of 397 square kilometers, comprising 10 sub-districts, with a population of 5.37 million.
Over the past 40 years of reform and opening-up, Bao'an has established a modern industrial system characterized by strategic emerging industries as the forerunner, the electronic information industry as the pillar, supported by equipment manufacturing and traditional advantaged industries, and complemented by a well-developed high-end service sector. As a major industrial, export-oriented, and manufacturing powerhouse in Shenzhen, Bao'an is home to 81 listed companies and nearly 7,400 national high-tech enterprises. In 2024, Bao’an ranked second in China's Top 100 Innovative Districts for the fourth consecutive year, with its GDP reaching RMB 530.04 billion. The district achieved an annual total industrial output value above designated size of RMB 1,050.5 billion, ranking first in Shenzhen for two consecutive years.
Bao'an possesses a modern, integrated transportation hub encompassing air, sea, high-speed rail, intercity rail, expressway, and metro networks. Key facilities include Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport, Dachanwan Port, Airport East Integrated Transportation Hub, the Guangzhou-Dongguan-Shenzhen Intercity Railway, the Yanjiang Expressway, the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway, National Highway 107, Bao'an Avenue, and seven operational metro lines (including Lines 1, 5, 6, 11, 12, 13, and 20). The world-class mega sea-crossing project, the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, has achieved main line connectivity, enabling a half-hour crossing of the Pearl River Estuary. By enhancing connectivity across the Pearl River and facilitating the smooth flow of factors within the Greater Bay Area, Bao'an is poised to become a veritable core of the region.
